Third Central Asiatic Expedition administrative records, 1916-1940.

Records encompass correspondence pertaining to Glover M. Allen's publication about the mammals of Mongolia and China. Correspondence of Roy Chapman Andrews with paleontologists and other scientists such as Walter Granger, Henry Fairfield Osborn, Frederick K. Morris, William D. Matthew, and other individuals concerning scientific matters and administration and planning of the expedition. Much correspondence pertains to general operations of the expedition such as applications to become members of the expedition party, first use of cars to explore an unknown country, equipment and supplies, publications, and some financial records. Some letters discuss the negative ramifications on the expedition of China's political turmoil of the mid- to late-1920s. Also, correspondence with Chinese scientists is interspersed throughout the collection, as well as route maps of the expedition.

William Diller Matthew was a vertebrate paleontologist and geologist.
